WEEK 2

In week 2, the class in conducted by Prof. Dr. Zaidatun Tasir. In this week I got a lot of information and also know a lot of new terms in technology. These are the 4 main things that I will highlight and reflect in this week's discussion

1. Differences between Programming vs Authoring
2. Standalone vs Web
3. Differences between webpage, website and Portal
4. Differences between Static Website vs Dynamic Website

Let us look all these elements into detail.

1. PROGRAMMING vs AUTHORING

There are a few differences between Programming and Authoring

AUTHORING is a pre programmed elements for the development of interactive multimedia and also   involves high level of graphical interface design. Authoring also involves high level of scripting. On the other hand PROGRAMMING involves with real language like C and Java. As for me I think PROGRAMMING is much more complicated because we have to start form the beginning and really have to learn code by code.

However AUTHORING also have disadvantages where the content creation is not generally affected by the choice of an Authoring System.

Before using any authoring system, we also have to understand the metaphor. Here are a few tips for categorise before choose the best method in authoring system:-
  • Undertand how you want the task to be accomplished
  • The duration time given to present the Multimedia
  • The audience
  • The objective of doing the Multimedia
For example, Power Point is using Slide Base, Authoware is using Icon Base and Flash is more to time frame and base. So we really have to know how it works. If we only want to display montaj before just a few seconds, the best choice is by using Flash. But if we want to explain to the audience using 50 to 60 slides for about 2 hours speech, its good if we use a power point.

2. STANDALONE vs WEB

Basically STANDALONEApplication do not need internet line and and involves a small group of user. On the other hand WEB application need internet line and can be accessed worldwide.

After attending this class, I can answer in a proper way if anybody ask which one will you choose either STANDALONE Application or WEB Application.

The answer is it depends on the application that you have. If you want it to be access by worldwide and access fast, then the WEB application is what you need.

But if you wanna create a powerful software which involves a lot of hardware features and resources, and also involves small group of user, then the best choice is Standalone Web.

Furthermore there are many ways to share and distribute STANDALONE Course ware. You can using CD, DVD, put in server, download, pen drive or external disc.

3. WEB PAGE, WEBSITE AND PORTAL

Honestly, before this I thought web page, website and portal are all the same. In fact I cannot differentiate which one is web page, website and portal. But after have been explained by Prof. Zaidatun, now I know that web page is only one page of web. Web site is several pages of web page. Portal is the page where you can get all information that you need. Its like a gateway. Its a web with broad array of resources and services. A good portal must have email service, hyperlink, top news, clock, search engine, online shopping, forum and any other information that can attract people.

4. STATIC WEBSITE vs DYNAMIC WEBSITE

As a beginner like me, when I first browse the Internet, I cannot immediately tell whether the website is static or dynamic. But this class really makes me understand the differences between STATIC Website and DYNAMIC Website.

If you look at the site and see the content is very simple and stagnant and being developed for the small group of user, it is a STATIC Website. STATIC Website o not change the page and content very often. It also involves small amount of money to develop. Any changes can only being made by the hired expertise.

On the other hand, DYNAMIC Website have all features that did not have in STATIC Website and its very useful to the user. Of course the cost of the development is higher and much more expensive but the benefits are numerous.

DYNAMIC Website can give facilities to the website owner to simply update any changes and add new contact. Any top news and event can easily be posted to the site through a simple browser interface. DYNAMIC Website also involves large data size and need more storage capacity.

A good DYNAMIC Website can interact with the user and give a lot of facilities such as search engines, log in, searching facilities if forgot password, mailing service, forum, credit card processing or also online shopping.

To make it more clear, I will summarize the advantages and disadvantages of STATIC Website and DYNAMIC Website in this table.

WEEK 1

Alhamdulillah berjaya mendaftar subjek MPT 1193 (Authoring System)

Agak risau kerana tiada basic dalam Flash, Dreamweaver, ASP dan PHP. Aku anggap ini satu cabaran dalam proses pembelajaran. And I know I have to work hard.

Dalam minggu pertama ni, lecturer iaitu Dr. Asykin hanya menerangkan tentang perjalanan silibus dan kaedah penilaian sepanjang semester ini.
